Missed Call Statistics

Answering-service agents with headsets answering calls

This page collects the published figures behind Answer4U’s case — with sources, dates, and methodology notes, so you can check every number yourself. If a figure cannot be sourced, it does not appear here.

The headline figures

US restaurants lose an estimated $20 billion a year to missed calls — QSR Magazine (derivation)

QSR Magazine’s derivation estimates the annual revenue US restaurants lose when calls go unanswered. The per-restaurant figure used elsewhere on this site (around 150 missed calls per month for a typical restaurant) is derived from that total and from industry call-volume assumptions. It is labeled as a derivation wherever it appears, not as a measured fact about any individual restaurant. Your own number will differ — the ROI calculator exists for exactly that reason.

78% of callers abandoned a business after an unanswered call — CallRail, 2025 (via oncrew.ai)

CallRail’s 2025 caller research, as reported by oncrew.ai, found that more than three quarters of callers gave up on a business after a single unanswered call.

82% would call a competitor instead — CallRail, 2025 (via oncrew.ai)

The same research found that over four fifths of callers would contact a competitor after being unable to reach a business. Together, the two figures describe the real cost of a ringing phone: the caller does not wait, and does not come back on their own.

Figures we deliberately do not use

An often-quoted figure claiming most callers never call back circulates in older blog content, but its sourcing is weak (a 2014 contributor piece and a 2016 study, neither directly measuring the claim). We do not use it, and we do not repeat the number here. Similarly, an industry “per-call value” range appears in one competitor’s blog as an industry estimate; if it is ever cited on this site, it will be attributed to that blog as an estimate, not presented as research.

Methodology note

Every figure on this page is either a published research result (with its publisher and year) or a labeled derivation from one. No Answer4U performance figure appears here, because no such figure has been independently measured and published.
